Broadening Diversity and Inclusivity in Human Factors and Ergonomics

Diversity and inclusivity are important, with demonstrated impact on numerous outcomes, including breadth, creativity, innovation of work as well satisfaction commitment to organizations. The Human Factors Ergonomics Society (HFES) Inclusion Committee is charged increasing diversity inclusiveness within the society and, by extension, (HF/E) profession. We conducted a thematic analysis an alternative format session at HFES 2019 Annual Meeting, focusing breakout where attendees discussed “Broadening Participation in HF/E.” Participants reported current levels inclusion HF/E profession lacking due limited early knowledge about field compounded resource barriers, which ultimately prevents involvement outreach activities intended increase participation. Thoughtfully designed partnerships relevant organizations individuals could mitigate these factors, provided be accessible all.
